What is photodynamic therapy?

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a medium depth texture refining procedure used mostly for medical purposes to treat a precancerous skin change. However, PDT has been shown to improve acne, rosacea, and stimulate collagen growth, too.* To increase the effectiveness of the treatment, affected skin must first be coated with a prescription solution called aminolevulinic acid (ALA), which makes the target cells or glands more sensitive to light. It is typically applied one hour prior to activation with our red/blue LED light source. Then light is applied to the area to be treated. The light causes the drug to react with oxygen, which forms a chemical that treats the precancerous cells.

What can I expect from PDT?

Your skin will first be cleansed using special solutions to remove oils. aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is then applied to your skin using a special applicator in which it is packaged. The solution remains on your skin for approximately one hour for the face. If the back or chest is treated, your incubation time may vary from 1 to 2 hours, depending on the recommendation for your individual situation. The aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is then activated by red/blue LED light source. PDT can range from no discomfort to a fairly intense burning sensation that eases when finished. An intense “sunburn” type reaction is the desired goal and some tenderness and discomfort is expected. After the procedure, it is important to stay out of the sun for at least 48 hours to avoid reactivation of the aminolevulinic acid (ALA). Most people are completely healed in one week.*

How many treatments will I need?

Most patients only require one treatment a year.

Am I good candidate for PDT?

PDT may be right for you if you have sun-damaged skin, actinic keratoses, acne, inflammatory rosacea, hidradenitis suppurativa, or another less common skin disease.
